ABOUT THE SHELTIE (SHETLAND SHEEPDOG)
The Shetland Sheepdog originated in Scotland and the Shetland Islands. This dog breed was originally used to herd and guard sheep. It looks like a miniature rough- coated collie. The standard size is 13-16 inches tall and 14-27 pounds. The Shetland Sheepdog has a double coat which is long and abundant all over the body, but shorter on the head and legs. The coat forms a mane around the neck and chest. The outer coat covers a soft undercoat. Regular brushing is important. Coat colors of Shelties vary from sable to blue merle or black with varying amounts of white and tan.
The beautiful Shetland Sheepdog is loyal , strives to please, and makes a wonderful companion. This breed may be suspicious of strangers, barking, and not allowing itself to be touched by the stranger. Proper socialization at an early age helps the Shetland Sheepdog overcome fear of strangers. Shelties can be very good watchdogs. They are sensitive to the tone of the human voice. Their owners should be calm but firm.
The Sheltie is one of the smartest breeds of dogs, thus very trainable. Shetland Sheepdogs like to be busy. They are active dogs that need lots of exercise. By nature, the Shetland Sheepdog is a herder and will try to herd almost anything. For safety of the dog, they must be taught to not chase cars.
When kept as a house pet, the Sheltie learns the habits of his human family and invents ways to please his master. The Shetland Sheepdog is truly a dog that is a pleasure to own and live with.
